Intercultural Conflicts -how our judgments become our teachers.pdf
Authors: Karin Brugman & Jitske Kramer

Abstract:
Most people enjoy visiting different places around the world. Meeting different people and learning about their ways of life gives a sense of adventure. A lot of people rave about places that are “still authentic and have not yet been taken over by tourism”. Working or living with people from different cultures, however, tends to transform this adventure into a troublesome relationship, peppered with confusions and misunderstandings. Why is it suddenly so difficult to keep our minds open? How is it that our judgments suddenly become harsher, and cultural values tend to polarize?
In this article, Kramer and Brugman explain the mechanisms underlying cultural dynamics and provide tools with which to improve cultural intelligence. As a coach, you need to be able to help people open up to differences. This requires actively listening to what our judgments are telling us. Judgments should be taken seriously; this article gives an example of how voice dialogue can help us do this.
